BRIAN ENO

1. A pioneer in visual arts

“What I dreamt of was to be able to make pieces of music that didn’t repeat, that just kept running on and on and on, always changing.” by Brian Eno

Ambient music is music that is constantly changing and becomes part of the environment element like rain and wind, so it was only natural that Eno’s creative aspiration turned to installation art that creates space.
“77 Million Paintings” is a masterpiece of an installation that embodies “generative art” (automatically generated art using sound and light) in which sound and light shift perpetually without repetition. As the name implies, it is “generative art” that automatically generates 77 Million Paintings.

2. Founder of ambient music

“Ambient music” is about shift in perception and is one of the most important revolutions in music culture in the 20th century.

The album “Ambient 1: Music for Airports,” released in 1978, was the first music album that used the term “ambient music.” It is still considered a monumental work in ambient music. Whereas a musician would normally hope the listeners will listen to their music intensively, “ambient music” explores a completely opposite value in music. It does not in any way force the listeners to listen. The sound does not come at the listeners’ ears directly but instead spreads spatially in the room like it was designed to embrace them like the sound of rain or wind.

3. Activist: Social activities including environmental issues

Eno established “Earth Percent,” a charity that aims to solve climate change problems. This event will also be donating part of the profit.

Eno has been involved in social activities from early on, in his pursuit for a better world. So it was no surprise to see him start the “Earth Percent” charity, which encourages the music industry to commit to climate change and encourages people in the industry to pledge a small percentage of their profits.

AMBIENT KYOTO will also be donating a portion of the profits from the event.

4. Legendary producer

Eno has produced some of the most iconic records in music history with artists such as David Bowie, U2, and Coldplay. Eno has always appreciated his connection with popular culture and never fails to fuse his artistry with it.

His collaboration with David Bowie on “Low” and “Heroes” are some of his best-known works and have become iconic masterpieces in rock history.
U2’s “The Joshua Tree” also reached No. 1 in the US and UK and won the Album of the Year Grammy Award, marking it the highest-selling album amongst U2’s original album. Coldplay’s masterpiece “Viva la Vida” also won the Album of the Year Grammy Award and reached No. 1 in both the US and UK.
